Wet Surface Air Cooler (WSAC™)

The Wet Surface Air Cooler (WSAC™) is a closed loop cooling system that is an alternative to a Cooling Tower / Heat Exchanger system. The fluid being cooled (or condensed) does not come into contact with the atmosphere.

WSAC™ systems have re-circulated water that cascades continuously over bundles of smooth tubes. Air moves over the tube bundles in a downward direction, concurrent with the cascading water. Heat is transferred by convection from the tube surface to the cascading water. The flow of air mingles with the flow of water, both moving in the same direction downward. The cascade is at an equilibrium temperature as water evaporates to the air.

WSAC™ systems are best applied for operations that will benefit from a leaving temperature of the process stream that is lower than can be reached economically by a cooling tower system. WSAC™ systems generally use significantly less water and chemical treatment than conventional cooling towers applied to the same duty.
